6-Week Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Course

 

Insight helps – but under stress, it often disappears. Thoughts escalate, your nervous system fires up, and primal protective habits kick in (withdraw, attack, appease, control, shut down). ACT is a behavioural approach that builds psychological flexibility, so you can tolerate discomfort, get unhooked from mental noise, and choose actions that match what matters to you – in real life, not just in session with your therapist!

In short, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT – said like ‘act’, not ‘a.c.t.’) aims to increase psychological flexibility: the capacity to stay in contact with what is happening in the present moment and respond in ways that serve you (and your relationships), even when discomfort such as when fear, anger, confusion, or anxiety shows up.

 

Psychological Flexibility:
Less emotional stuckness / overwhelm = More room for useful choices

 

In this self-paced, on-demand, online course you are helped to develop multiple skills, including:

  • noticing thoughts and emotions without feeling the need to automatically believe or obey them – no matter how big they are, or how incredibly convincing they are;

 

  • noticing and accepting feelings and body sensations with more understanding and less of an urgency to ‘get rid of them’. The better we get at this skill, the more effective we become at naturally reducing the overwhelming intensity of less-than-helpful feelings and sensations;

 

  • reconnecting with the present rather than being pulled into rumination or worry;

 

  • strengthening the “observing self” – that the part of you that can notice experience with steadiness and perspective.

 

  • We also clarify what matters most to you in real terms (your priorities, the person you want to be, the direction you want your life to head).

 

  • Finally, you will practice how to translate these learnings into committed action: specific behavioural steps, practice, and follow-through over time.
